How to Adjust Timing Pointer | Johnson & Evinrude

To correctly test and adjust your outboard motor's ignition timing, it is important to ensure the motor's timing pointer is properly aligned with the Top Dead Center (TDC) position. Correctly setting the timing pointer will enable you to accurately adjust the ignition timing, ensuring consistent engine idling and smooth operation across the RPM range. Follow this procedure precisely and in sequence to achieve the best results.

Steps:

  1. Safety First: Disconnect the spark plug leads to prevent accidental engine starting.
  2. Remove Spark Plugs: Take out all spark plugs.
  3. Position the Timing Pointer:
    • Rotate the crankshaft clockwise using a wrench or socket until the TDC (Top Dead Center) mark on the timing wheel is about 1 inch (25.4 mm) past the timing pointer.
    •  Note: Always rotate the crankshaft clockwise
  4. Install the Piston Stop:
    • Insert OMC Piston Stop (P/N 384887) into the No. 1 spark plug hole and adjust until it contacts the No. 1 piston. Lock the tool in place.
  5. Mark Position "A":
    • Hold the piston firmly against the tool and mark the timing wheel directly across from the pointer. Concider this mark "A."
  6. Mark Position "B":
    • Continue rotating the crankshaft clockwise until the piston contacts the tool again. Mark this spot on the timing wheel and concider it mark "B."
  7. Remove the Piston Stop:
    • Take out the piston stop tool.
  8. Find the Midpoint ("C"):
    • Identify the midpoint between marks "A" and "B" using the molded-in marks on the timing wheel. Mark this midpoint and concider it mark "C."
  9. Check Timing Pointer Alignment:
    • If mark "C" aligns with the TDC line, the timing pointer is correctly aligned. If not, continue to Step 10.
  10. Adjust the Timing Pointer:
    • Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until mark "C" aligns with the pointer. Hold the crankshaft in this position.
    • Loosen the pointer screw and adjust the pointer to align with the TDC mark. Tighten the screw.
  11. Verify Alignment:
    • Repeat the procedure to confirm the timing pointer is correctly aligned.
