Leading Boating Magazine is Acquired
Auckland, New Zealand – Boating New Zealand, a leading boating magazine, has announced the purchase of Trade-a-Boat NZ, a popular online boat sales marketplace. The acquisition, effective August 30, 2024, includes Trade-a-Boat NZ’s website, assets, and intellectual property. Trade-a-Boat NZ, a familiar name in the New Zealand marine industry since the mid-1990s, started as a simple boat listings platform. Over the years, it evolved into a full-fledged boating magazine before transitioning to a digital-only format in 2016.
Boating New Zealand, known for its print magazine and long-standing brokerage section, sees the acquisition of Trade-a-Boat NZ as a strategic move to expand its digital presence. The combined platforms aim to provide a comprehensive and user-friendly experience for both boat buyers and sellers.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to revitalize Trade-a-Boat NZ and make it a go-to destination for the boating community,” said boating New Zealand. “Our goal is to create a platform that is both affordable and effective for people looking to buy or sell boats.”

Mercury Racing Surprises with V6 150R and 200R Outboards at Cannes
At the Cannes boat show, Mercury Racing introduced two new V6 outboard engines, the 150R and 200R, which focus on delivering high torque for improved acceleration. Both engines displace 3.4 liters, with the 150R reaching 6000 RPM and the 200R up to 6400 RPM. These engines incorporate Mercury's Transient Spark Technology for better hole shot performance and include features like Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) and fuel optimization tools such as Active Trim and Adaptive Speed Control.
Unlike many competitors, the 150R and 200R run on 87 octane fuel, offering cost savings. They also feature an 85-amp alternator and an efficient battery management system to handle onboard electronics.
The 150R offers shaft lengths of 20 and 25 inches, while the 200R comes in two versions: the Torque Master, built for speeds up to 85 mph, and the Sport Master, designed for high-performance boats exceeding 100 mph. These new models expand Mercury’s V6 range and bring advanced technology and performance features to smaller, more versatile engines.
Inboard and Sterndrive Starter motor failures.
Although the outside of the starter motor looks fine, the flywheel picked up water from the bilge and pumped it inside the starter causing the corrosion shown here:
WATER INTRUSION IS THE #1 CAUSE OF STARTER FAILURE.
- If water gets pumped into the motor portion of the starter from the flywheel, it will not drain out. As you can see, rust and corrosion will destroy the inside components of the starter.
THE #2 CAUSE OF STARTER FAILURE IS WATER INGESTED INTO THE ENGINE.
- Leaking exhaust manifolds, gaskets and risers are often the source. Damage to the mounting pads, as shown above, indicate the starter has been loose on the engine; possibly caused by water ingestion into the cylinder. Although the engine may not experience a complete hydro lock, if enough water is on top of the piston to raise the compression to a high level, the starter bolts and mounting pads will be stressed beyond normal load conditions.
