PROMT Parts proudly supply CDI marine electronics around New Zealand. For more than 30 years, CDI Electronics has provided value and lowest cost-of-ownership to the pleasure marine and motorsport industry. CDI’s commitment is to provide superior ignition and diagnostic solutions to engine users and manufacturers throughout the world.

CDI Electronics has designed, manufactured, and distributed their outboard engine components from their facility in Alabama. We offer over 700 outboard engine ignition parts, along with service tools, and marine engine diagnostic software for most of the major engine brands.

The product offering covers engines originating from 1968 through most current 2 cycle outboard engines and sterndrive motors. Our High Performance Spark Plug Wire Sets are designed with performance in mind featuring 8mm wires with Kevlar cores.

The terminals are made of high quality stainless steel, copper & bronze. The marine duty cycle runs at a higher RPM with extended loads for longer & requires only the best quality HT leads for extended service intervals.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OUTBOARD IGNITION SYSTEM

The flywheel energises the stator and timer base to provide the signal to the power pack/switch box to ‘fire’ the correct cylinder at the right time. The switch box / powerpack transforms this charge voltage to the ignition coils at a voltage of 50-50000 volts to give life to your Champion or NGK sparkplug. When running your boat for the day, lights, electronics and accessories will drain your batteries state of charge and its your ignition system, that maintains your battery voltage getting its power supply form the stator & regulates the correct battery voltage via the rectifier or regulator/rectifier.

Always start your boating with a fully charged battery. Do not rely on your engine to charge a flat battery. It’s your engines job to maintain the batteries voltage only. Depending on how you use your boat, for a full day on the water your engine will likely only run for a portion of this time. At an idle speed your engines charging output is often down compared to at cruising speeds & higher RPM.

A rectifier is typical on small outboards that are fitted with electric start. Larger outboards with more capable charging systems have a regulator/rectifier to maintain a battery voltage of between 12.5 to 15.4 Volts.

What’s the difference between a switch box, a Power Pack and a CDI unit?

They do the same job and really it’s a different name for the same part, Mercury call it a Mercury Switch Box, Johnson and Evinrude call it a Powerpack, Yamaha and Suzuki call it a CDI unit.
