Tampa Man Rides Out Cyclone In Boat
A Tampa man known as “Lt. Dan” went viral on social media for refusing to evacuate his boat ahead of the storm in Milton but has since survived.
NewsNation’s Brian Entin checked on him late Wednesday night after the storm passed, and he reassured Entin, “I’m fine.”
Lt. Dan, whose real name is Joseph Malinowski, gained attention from TikTok user Tampa Terrence, whose videos showcased concerns over his decision to stay on his sailboat. Like the character from Forrest Gump, who also refused to abandon his boat during a storm, Tampa's Lt. Dan is missing a leg.
“I’m not going anywhere because the safest place to be is on a boat in a flood,” he stated before the storm. “We learned that with Noah. Everyone who stayed on land drowned. Noah and the animals lived.”
At a press conference, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor announced that Tampa police rescued “Lt. Dan” and took him to a shelter, but he has since returned to his boat.

New Marine Protections in the Hauraki Gulf/Tikapa Moana
The government is advancing plans for new marine protection areas in the Hauraki Gulf, while allowing some fishing to continue. The Hauraki Gulf Tikapa Moana Marine Protection Bill, with amendments, will establish 19 new protection areas, nearly tripling the space protected.
Conservation Minister Tama Potaka emphasized that the bill aims to restore the health and mauri of the Gulf, protecting key habitats like dog cockle beds, kelp forests, and fragile coral. One-third of all seabirds in Aotearoa New Zealand breed in the Gulf.
Potaka noted that while the bill supports the government’s conservation goals, it also allows limited fishing for local communities, ensuring the continuation of customary non-commercial fishing rights.
The Hauraki Gulf Forum, however, has expressed concerns that changes to the bill could undermine long-term conservation efforts. Careful monitoring of these new protected areas will be funded by the International Visitor Levy and reallocated conservation funds.
The bill aims to balance environmental protection with the economic value of the Gulf, estimated at $100 billion.
Protection Areas
The new protection areas are within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. The Park is not a protected area. It was established in 2000, under the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Act, to achieve integrated management of the area across land and sea. The Hauraki Gulf Forum is the statutory body established under this Act.

Check Your Water Separating Fuel Filter and Fuel System.
As spring arrives in New Zealand, it’s time to prepare your boat for the water. Key tasks include checking your water-separating fuel filter for water contamination and ensuring your fuel is fresh.
Water can enter your fuel tank via condensation or leaks during winter storage, leading to poor engine performance or damage. Inspect and replace your fuel filter regularly to prevent water from reaching the engine.
Stale fuel can cause hard starts, reduced power, and fuel system deposits. Drain old fuel and refill with fresh petrol for optimal performance.
Fuel Additives to Consider:
- Fuel System Cleaner removes varnish from carburetors or injectors, improving efficiency;
- Fuel Stabilizer prevents fuel degradation during long storage periods;
- Fuel Conditioner enhances petrol lubricity and reduces foaming.
Ensure your fuel system is free of contamination by using the right additives to keep your engine running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.
